Pipeline to a Cure: Riding Waves for Cystic Fibrosis Awareness

07.18.23

The Southern California Chapter of the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is thrilled to announce the 16th Annual Pipeline to a Cure event, dedicated to raising funds and awareness for cystic fibrosis, a progressive, genetic, multi-organ disease affecting 40,000 individuals across the United States.  Join this remarkable gathering, renowned for its laid-back vibe and impactful mission, on July 22nd at the beautiful Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach in Huntington Beach.

This year's event holds special significance as we pay tribute to Rick and Adrienne Matros of Newport Coast, who have been long-standing supporters of the Foundation's relentless efforts to find a cure for this genetic disease. Rick Matros, the CEO of Sabra Healthcare REIT, and Adrienne, a psychologist, are not only devoted parents to seven children but also loving grandparents to more than a dozen grandchildren. Their profound understanding of the value of giving back and the impact of medical advancements on those with cystic fibrosis has made them shining examples of dedication and compassion.

One of the highlights of the Pipeline gala will be the inspiring story of Shelby Klug, a remarkable young woman living with CF. A graduate of Chapman University, Shelby has defied expectations since birth, surpassing her initial life expectancy of 25 years. Her incredible journey with cystic fibrosis has included two double lung transplants and a kidney transplant. Today, Shelby is not only a thriving professional but also a beacon of hope for everyone touched by this condition.

Cystic fibrosis is an inherited chronic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system of approximately 40,000 children and adults in the United States, with 105,000 worldwide. The condition is caused by a defective gene and its protein product, which leads to the production of abnormally thick, sticky mucus that clogs the lungs, resulting in life-threatening lung infections, and obstructs the pancreas, hindering natural enzyme function for food digestion and absorption.

The genesis of the Pipeline to a Cure event lies in the groundbreaking discovery made by Australian researchers, who found that CF children who surfed exhibited significantly healthier lungs. Doctors identified the profound effect of inhaling saltwater mist, which aids in rehydrating the lining of the lungs, enabling CF patients to more effectively eliminate bacteria-contaminated mucus. This revelation eventually led to the development of a hypertonic saline solution, now inhaled daily by CF patients worldwide, mimicking the benefits of a "surf session" on a regular basis.

Last year, the Foundation invested a staggering $265 million in research and care for individuals affected by the disease. The funds raised through events like Pipeline to a Cure, along with countless others held nationwide, support the CF Foundation's mission to cure cystic fibrosis, provide specialized care, and promote research and drug development to help all people with CF lead long, fulfilling lives.
